Children’s Mental Health in the Medical Home
Pediatric primary care practice is transforming. According to the Task Force on Vision of Pediatrics, mental health care will constitute 30% or more of general pediatric practice by 2020. Clinicians treating the pediatric population continually require a wider array of skills including more in-depth knowledge of, and comfort treating, behavioral, developmental, and mental health concerns.
UPIQ has partnered with the Intermountain Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry to host a series of hour-long webinars aimed at addressing children’s mental health issues in the primary care setting.
Depression in children and adolescents is a debilitating, serious illness with acute and chronic mortality and morbidity which most often presents in the primary care setting. This presentation will review evidence-based guidelines for the effective assessment, diagnosis and treatment of youth depressive disorders in the primary care setting.
Pediatric Bipolar Disorder: Recognition & Management – Douglas G. Kondo, M.D.
Children and adolescents with Bipolar Disorder often present initially at their Pediatrician’s office, and the differential diagnosis with Major Depression can be complex. An overview of pediatric Bipolar Disorder and current controversies will be presented, followed by evidence-based recommendations for diagnosis and medical management in the primary care setting.
Interviewing the Young Child – Mary Burris, M.D.
Interviewing young children can be difficult and sometimes seems unproductive. The presentation will include basic interviewing techniques to maximize information gathering for ages 3-10 in the outpatient and other settings. These techniques include the structure, vocabulary, and timing of interview questions based on developmental level. In addition, it will cover common pitfalls, difficult situations, and time management.
The use of rating scales for both diagnosis and tracking as well as evidence-based psychopharmacologic treatments for ADHD will be reviewed. Participants will understand different formulations of stimulant medications (methylphenidate and mixed amphetamine salts) and other FDA-indicated medications for the treatment of ADHD as well as titration strategies, augmentation strategies, and side-effect management strategies.
Eating Disorders: Recognition, Management & Utilization of Treatment Resources – Rachele McCarthy, M.D.
Eating disorders are serious and life-threatening illnesses. They are most commonly identified and treated in the primary care setting. This presentation aims to help pediatricians screen for, recognize and provide treatment for children and adolescents with eating disorders. Evidence based treatments will be discussed as well as providing resources to help patients access a full spectrum of services necessary for recovery.
Youth Suicide: Assessment & Prevention– Doug Gray, M.D.
Utah youth suicide rates are consistently high. Opportunities for prevention of suicide among adolescents exist in the primary care setting. In this presentation learn about the assessment of the suicidal teenager as well as methods of prevention.
Assessing Behavioral Concerns at Home and in Care Settings – Sandy MacLeod, Ph.D., BCBA-D
Participants will be able to know how to use environmental modifications and contextual variables to prevent behavior problems assess contributing factors; assess quickly and effectively if a child has a severe behavior problem that requires further intervention; provide parent(s) of a child with minor or less consequential behavior problems with basic behavior tools and a plan for follow up; maintain a relationship with the family while addressing behavioral concerns.
Initial Treatment and Management of Common Behavioral Issues – Peg Tan, MFT
Some of the most difficult challenges for children include behavioral problems. At times healthy and well-adjusted children experience environmental stress, which leads to behavior problems and some children show behavior problems without any obvious proceeding stressful event. This presentation aims to help pediatricians and other clinicians treating children to provide initial treatment and management of common behavioral issues in the primary care setting.
Addressing Parenting Skills – Tracy Golden, Ph.D., LPC
Primary care clinicians encounter families with concerns about their children’s mental health. In this presentation, participants will actively discuss practical mechanisms for pediatricians and other care providers to address parenting skills.
Crisis Plans for Children or Adolescents with an Urgent Mental Health Problem– Kristi Kleinschmit, MD
Participants will recognize common symptoms indicating crisis situations, understand how to create a crisis plan, and review the mental health system, and how to navigate to more acute levels of care.
Recognizing Complex Mental Health Symptoms Requiring Specialty Care– James Ashworth, MD
Participants will be able to better distinguish symptoms of mental illness requiring specialty care referral, understand useful information to include in a referral, and select steps to implement in their own practice setting.
Participants will be able to identify effective practices and key strategies for implementing trusting family-professional partnerships in their clinics.
Reviewing Approaches to Treatment with SSRIs – Jeremy Kendrick, MD
Presentation/discussion addresses: indications for SSRI use in children and adolescents; evidence-based use of SSRI medications in children and adolescents; risks, benefits, and dosing of SSRIs in children and adolescents; factors that affect which SSRI to recommend for a given patient; and treatment algorithms for SSRI use in pediatric depression and anxiety.

Presentation/discussion addresses: the history of the black box warning for antidepressants in children; literature surrounding SSRI use and suicidality; and approaches to obtaining informed consent with the black box.
